Growing Up In East Germany My Childhood Series Book 1 edition by Yvonne Jones Children eBooks
The author wrote an honest to goodness memoir growing up in East Germany, I just adore all the many facets of it. It seems I was there experiencing the walks to and from school or to her mother's work place or walks with her grandmother to town. I felt for her because wherever they needed to go it was always by foot or a train ride when they visit relatives. One part made me laugh, she hid the ham in a place only she knew and days later you can guess what happened, yep stinky galore. The story kept me there in the moment peeling one layer at a time revealing memories she treasured. I like how smooth the story flowed, I reached the end to fast and wished I had not, I wanted to know more. Thank you for sharing. I received a free digital download in exchange for a review. Growing Up In East Germany My Childhood Series Book 1 edition by Yvonne Jones Children eBooks Reviews
I am so glad I was given the opportunity to read Growing Up in East Germany. The author gave me this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a must read book. It was nice to read about a child growing up in East Germany in the 1980. How it was a luxury to own a car or have a television. This little girl and her mom had to walk everywhere no matter the weather.
I hope to read more from Yvonne Jones. Wonderful writer who made the book come to life
I expected to find this book interesting, but ended up being totally engrossed. Jones has the voice of a natural storyteller, pulling me in with her very first words. The simple sentence structure lends itself well to the style she chose, and makes this an excellent book both for young readers to read on their own and for reading out loud and sharing together. As a child of the '80s, reading this book was an excellent counterbalance to the stories I heard growing up in the west. This is a great book for children, and a great read for adults as well. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes!
Yvonne Jones recently forwarded me a complimentary copy of "Growing Up In East Germany." My husband and I spent 10 months in Germany as missionaries during 2013 & loved the people. We made some lifelong friends & fell in love with the beauty of the people, as well as the country itself. It's a sweet read for the young and the young at heart. Having been there it was even more interesting to me. I loved her candor, her humor and her transparency, sharing her years growing up there. It is a precious book. Thank you, Yvonne.

Wonderful book! What could be looked at as a depressing time in East Germany is cherished by Yvonne. Her mother, her grandmother, and all her experiences. One banana a year? Many of us would look at that as unthinkable, but Yvonne treasured that banana. It makes one look at our own childhoods and appreciate all the small, unremarkable to some, moments in our lives. I look forward to learning more of her childhood and urge others to follow her story, as well!
This book is easy to read and teaches children about the German culture, and also to value what you have. As it points out, times were different. It's true, and this book reminded me of how when I was growing up, lychee fruits were a new thing in Canada and no kids my age had cell phones. Nowadays even six-year-olds have phones! Times really have changed. But throughout the book it proves that growing up in East Germany was an adventure and that the place you live is always a part of you no matter where you go.
I received a review copy and read it in one evening, sometimes laughing aloud, other times nearly crying. What makes the author's telling so engaging is that she pays attention to detail and narrows her audience to her children. That is, she's not taking into account the whole world; she is simply letting us eavesdrop on an enchanting tale. In doing so, Jones does appeal to a wide audience, giving us permission to write our unique stories in sharp contrast to the lives our children lead today. Her unique and authentic story, takes us to a country where toilet paper is rationed ("I hope you will always have enough paper on hand") and her toilet is a seat on a sewer standpipe--"very, very, very smelly." She grows up with so little, it takes our breath away. Yet in her child's voice, she lists all she has as though she owns a small kingdom. And that is what is so convincing of her character (pure and resilient), which every writer reveals in every story told. She counts even the piles of coal and potatoes in the cellar (which they have to carry up in buckets), and the Christmas decorations in the attic. Other delights are the grandpa-made swing and sandbox in the garden--a garden that requires hard work to produce its bounty. We love even the feather blanket she sleeps under in the icy cold and the trike she pedals to the delicious bakery. As a writer, Jones has learned the secret of engagement. It is in vivid detail. I will not forget even her hiding place behind the tool shed. We want more of this first in My Childhood Series.
This book reminded me a lot of a Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but more suitable for children, ages 7-12. Yvonne Jones describes her childhood with a lot of detail. I can't believe some of the things I read, since I was growing up the same time as her. I didn't know much about East Germany, but now I do. The best part of the book is that even though she didn't have much, and her government had strict rules, she still had love and her family.
This would be a great book for a parent to read to their children, and to start discussions about the parents childhood. Also, children could tell their parents more things about their childhood too, that maybe due to being busy you don't always have time to do.
I don't have children, but I still enjoyed this book. It's really for all ages.
